Tofu is a versatile and healthy protein that is a staple in many Asian cuisines, including Korean. In this recipe, we will be making a spicy Korean tofu dish that is packed with flavor and heat. The tofu is cooked until it is crispy and browned, then tossed in a spicy sauce made with soy sauce, hot chili flakes, and sesame oil. This dish is perfect for those who love a little bit of heat in their meals and is sure to be a hit with the whole family. It can be served as a main dish with steamed rice and a variety of side dishes, or as a flavorful and protein-packed topping for a bowl of noodles or grains.
Step 1
Pad dry your tofu and slice into roughly 10 pieces. Cut the onion and spring onion.
Step 2
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add two tablespoons of vegetable oil and fry the tofu on both sides until golden brown (4 minutes per side). When finished, let dry on kitchen paper.
Step 3
Mix the soy sauce, sugar, chili flakes, and water in a bowl and heat up your skillet again. Add one tbsp of vegetable oil and sautee your onion, garlic and the white parts of the spring onion for about two minutes.
Step 4
Then add the sauce you just made and simmer for 2-3 minutes, until it thickens slightly.
Step 5
Now its time to add your fried tofu to the party and simmer for two more minutes.
Step 6
Stir in the sesame oil and serve hot, garnished with additional green onions and sesame seeds.
Chefs tip
"Although this can be eaten as a main dish, I personally prefer to combine this with some other Korean (or Asian in general) side dishes. For example, you can take a look at our beef bulgogi and spicy cucumber salad recipes. Let us know, what you think of this recipe, and make sure you tag us on your socials when posting pictures. We would love to show your version as well!"
